Hello ladies. I'm really interested in joining a book club and I'm wondering if you're taking new members? I'm in Afghanistan right now, but would love to join when I get home in the fall. Thanks!

jill 2008 may 24th

great fun last night girls.....wuhwuuuuh!

jill 2008 may 15th

lydia 2008 may 14th

Hi book club members, I don't have any excuse......I wasn't even in France, or even too busy, but I had a cheap moment and went on the long waiting list at the library. I(Todd)finally ordered it on line and just received it yesterday. So, obviously I have not read any of it yet, and I also know that Mary was on the library list and still does not have the book. Does anyone else have any reason why they havent read the book yet? So I'm proposing a suggestion to move the book club into June sometime. If that doesn't work for the majority I will be doing a quick read.

francie 2008 march 14th

Hey book lovers!! One of my favorite sales is coming up. its the annual book sale at the downtown public library april 12-13. check out their website for more details. there are thousands of used books for sale for dirt cheap!!! oh and i think its a fundrasier thingy.

erin 2008 march 12th email

Hello Everyone, My name is Erin, I'm 24 years old and I love to read. I am interested in your book club, I was just wondering what the age range is? and are you guys accepting new members? Thanks

shauna 2008 march 7th

Oh Sandy I do remember those days. It will get better Derek and I are now sleeping in. Light at the end of the tunnel my friend.

april 2008 march 2nd

It will get easier when the baby starts to get into a routine and you can anticipate a bit of quiet time. I hope that you and your new family are doing well (and sleeping!)

sandy 2008 february 29th

Wow...I read at least 6 books between Christmas and Valentine's day. I've gotten through 5 pages in the last 2 weeks!

shauna 2008 february 27th

Your guys are not going to believe this but Derek won a trip to the Dominican Republic from April 10 to the 17th so I will be missing the next meeting. I would hate to ask everyone to change the date but if there was another time I would love to see you guys. I do however understand if I am asking to much. I am missing you guys and if we can't change the date I will be at the next meeting for sure. Shauna

sandu 2008 february 17th

Hi ladies, I wish I had been there for the discussion! Bill is reading Infidel right now, and I was planning on reading it after him...I'm very excited! See you soon. Sandy

shauna 2008 february 16th

Hi you guys I am so impressed with the book choice. I am missing all of you guys as I lay in the sun but I was thinking of you all, missing our meeting about this timely book. Sandy, I am so happy for you!!! Anyway I will see you guys the next book club. Your burnt friend Shauna

april 2008 february 16th

Hi Ladies...I ws loking for the book at Costco but I didn't see it. Has anyone seen it anywhere alse? I'm thinking best bet for anyone who wants to buy it is to order on line at Chapters. Any orders over $40 gets free shipping so if anyone wants to order a copy with me then we can save a few bucks. It will cost around $20. Anyone interested?

sandy 2008 january 17th

I too can be flexible if others would like to try to adjust. However, I know that gets tricky. Good analogy Francie...it may just be a 400 page accident. I am very interested to hear the discussion.

francie 2008 january 15th

wow, lucky you. what a sweet man. I am flexiable if the group wants to change the date. I would love to hear your opinion about this book, although i think its kinda like driving by a car accident. you don't wanna look but you do. and then you feel sick. i'm only a few chapters in....

shauna 2008 january 5th

Hi everyone Derek bought me a trip to mexico for Christmas and we will be leaving on Feb 15th. I know that it is very hard to change the date but I am sure you will all be ok without me. francie 2007 june 26th

I pulled into my work parking lot this morning, late as usual. but i had to sit and listen to the new chili peppers song because i really like it. anyway the chorus goes something like....tell me baby, whats your story? where you coming from? where you going to? .. are you lonely? .... its familiar right? he must of got the idea from the Balinese. except he asks the marriage question differently. anyway, enjoy the song when you hear it.

susan jones 2007 january 14th email

Love your web site! Nicely done! I have been searching for some time to find a book club to join. Would like to share a love of books and the opportunity to meet new and interesting people. Many of your books I have read and enjoyed - top five books would be: Stones from the River, Five Quarters of the Orange, Time Traveller's Wife, A Prayer for Owen Meany, A Fine Balance - these five until a great new novel takes hold. Best children's book would be Ferdinand - hands down. Love Dark (80% or more) Chocolate. I see much of your group is quite young. I am a, some would say, hip 47. If you are interested in adding new members who may have more "book reading years" than some-would love to hear from you.

kate 2007 january 4th email

Hello! We are a group of women who were inspired by the Books in the City website to start our own book club. We've been meeting for a year and are now interested in welcoming new ladies into our group. We meet every six weeks and rotate who picks our book selection (we have varied tastes within the group) and that person hosts the group either in their home (everyone brings yummy snacks) or at a cafe somewhere. If you are interested in checking us out please tell us a bit about yourself. In the playful spirit of Books in the City here are some suggestions... Sign Fave Colour Super Power Cocktail Chocolate/Vanilla Cherished children's book Fave books Most fabulous place(s) you've ever been Other stuff

jill 2007 january 4th

april 2007 january 1st

It doesn't make a difference to me if we change the meeting to the next weekend.

francie 2006 december 21st

shauna 2006 december 18th

Thanks April.

april 2006 december 15th

I got it at the South side location but I know Lydia had trouble finding it there. Maybe call them and see 577-1200.

shauna 2006 december 12th

francie 2006 december 4th

francie 2006 december 4th

hey guys, i was gonna suggest a night this week to go see fast food nation but it looks like its not playing anymore........ i guess i waited too long to set it up. maybe we'll have to rent it together instead.

melinda 2006 november 30th

I am in for the movie night too!

april 2006 november 27th

Eventhough I haven't read the book I would like to see it. Maybe I will get a chance to read it over the Christmas break. I finished The Time Travelers Wife and was crying through the whole last section (could be the pregnancy hormones). Thanks for letting me borrow it Francie.

francie 2006 november 25th

april 2006 november 5th

francie 2006 october 29th

oh my god! i just finished the book and i don't know what to do with myself. i plowed through the end because i couldn't put it down and i need to discuss it now. i wish we were having book club this very minute. i don't even wanna be around my family at the moment because it was so intense! i can't even believe this book....it blew me away....

samadhi 2006 october 25th email

I take this opportunity to introduce myself as the author of Circles in the Sand, which Morey McNeill a published, international award-winning author has described as a breakthrough work of non-fiction with all of the passion and drama of fiction. A soul is a beautiful thing to see, and that is what Samadhi's writing shows us While attending the BookExpo Canada in Toronto, the Body, Soul, and Spirit Holistic Fair in Calgary, and then the Body, Mind and Soul Expo in Seattle, the suggestion to have my book read in women's book clubs was brought up--each time--something I should have jumped on but it’s never too late. I’ve realized what a fantastic way to share a "woman's journey" within a group of women. An added bonus is that men have begun reading it as well, and are asking questions on healing and forgiveness--that’s a gift I wasn’t expecting but am beyond words [and that says a lot because I’m a writer!]. Veiled oppression of Arabian women was the crucial mirror needed to see my reflection. The stark emptiness of the desert echoed my own internal emptiness—until I saw the oasis. Follow my search for what I thought was lost—my soul. My book is a narrative non-fiction, Circles in the Sand, which is receiving beautiful reviews and is becoming a book written by a woman [me] for women. Many women have shed tears while sharing their personal journeys and have said that my voice is on behalf of all of those who are still learning to find their voice and their truth. The idea was presented to me that a book club would be an amazing experience in sharing, crying, laughing, and being inspired. My web site has a Theme Chart, showing the interweaving storylines, creating for a diverse demographic. A portion of monies earned is going to Women For Women International. There has been so much in the news lately about Darfur [finally] and seemingly 3/4 of our women are in dire straits. With the festive season soon upon us, I thought it was time to go full-tilt and ask individual clubs if they would be interested. Perhaps after reading the reviews, your group will be inspired as well. As I'm writing this, I think I will make a separate cheque out to WFWI, stating the various women's book clubs that have participated. I love that idea! It brings us all together in giving to those who desperately need us. If you have a moment to look at my web site, I would be honoured. I also have two beautiful and emotional slide shows that could possibly be shown. I’m not definite on this, as I would not be present to be part of the discussion. Thank you so much for your time. I appreciate it very, very much! I believe if we can touch one, we can touch one million...

shauna 2006 october 23rd

Hi everyone Hope everyone is enjoying the book(epic). I am just letting you know that Derek would like to take me away for our 2nd aniversary (I know Melinda we made it 2 years) the weekend of book club so I am going to have to miss it. Another one of our books being made into a movie by Brad Pitt's production company (along with Time Traveler's Wife): Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, snagging the rights to the sci-fi novel The Sparrow as a possible starring vehicle for him. The story follows a Jesuit priest who joins a mission to another planet only to provoke a war between two warring races.

jill 2006 february 21st

wow.... i thought Oprah was too way to harsh towards james frey yesterday. i hope he dosen't start using again. but really, who believes everything they read?? do people really believe that what is written newspapers is "the truth"? give me a break. oprah was choked because she looked bad for defending him. i don't know why this book was supposed to be so great to begin with but i don't think he deserved to be reprimanded like a child in front of an audience.

lydia 2006 january 26th

Today's Oprah show is going to talk about the controversy surrounding Million Little pieces.

lydia 2006 january 24th

How much of this book or any memoir is true, you are totally trusting the author to be honest and real.

francie 2006 january 12th

not sure.... but true or not...so far i don't think its worth the hype to begin with.

michele 2006 january 11th

have you seen all the controversy surrounding our next book? http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060111/people_nm/arts_frey_dc I haven't read it yet -- any thoughts? Does it matter if if it isn't all true?

barbara 2006 january 4th email

I noticed that you don't have space for any more members, but I would be interested in starting a chapter. I have already emailed some of the people who posted in your discussion group (as you suggested), and would like anyone who is interested to email me at bengelbart@shaw.ca.

francie 2005 december 16th

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and will miss you over the holidays!

jill 2005 december 16th

melinda 2005 november 2nd

We were wondering if we could move our meeting to Friday Dec 2 at 7pm. Please e mail me back and let me know if Friday will work for everyone. If not we can either pick another date or you guys can go ahead with the original plan and Jill and I will have to opt out. Sorry about the hassle

jill 2005 november 2nd

hi amy...we are full at the moment, but if you search through our postings, it seems there are a number of others interested in joining a book club as well....perhaps you could email them at the links provided and start up a new chapter!

janet 2005 september 14th email

Hello! I liked the site and I am currently looking to join a book club. I see that you guys are not currently accepting members, but if someone else wanted to start a new chapter of the club, I would definitely be interested.

jill 2005 september 8th email

amanda 2005 september 5th email

Hi ladies- what a great site you have! I've never seen such a great book club website. I too am looking to join a book club and some of the books that I have enjoyed lately are on your list. Can you let me know if you are accepting any members at all? Thanks and enjoy your reading!

chris 2005 september 3rd email

Hello ladies - love your site. I couldn't help but notice a few messages posted by people wanting to join a book club...well, I am looking to start a new book club in Edmonton. The kind of books I'd like to read would be pretty similar to the ones on this site. Looking for people in a younger age group (i.e. 35 and under) but that is not a hard-and-fast rule. So, if anyone reading this is interested, please email me for more information. Thanks so much, and happy reading!

jill 2005 august 27th

hey ladies.....check out our book club library with great selections that have been presented at book club, but haven't made the cut yet....a great resource for those of us who are drawing a blank when our turn rolls around to select options for reading! please let me know if there are others that have been presented before that you would like to see on the list.....

jill 2005 august 27th

thanks miranda! we're pretty full right now for members, but if we have a spot we'll let you know. thanks for the book recommendation!

miranda d. 2005 august 19th email

Hi ladies, love your website! And if you are ever looking for more members, drop me a note(I'm out in Sherwood Park). I've read many of the books on your list and would suggest Memory of Running by Ron McLarty (wonderful charactors!)

jill 2005 july 28th

hey francie...so glad you enjoyed it...i think i need to read it again!!!! it's such a great book.

francie 2005 july 26th

I finished memoirs of a geisha last night. Now i know why it came up in book club so much. It was beautiful. Very sad/tragic that children get sold and treated in such a manner. Her resilience was inspiring.

jill 2005 july 21st

hey ladies....seems like ages since our last book club and we still have another month to go!!!! looking forward to our next meeting!!!!

darren 2005 june 25th email

Hi Beverly. Thanks for the recommendation! I'm sure the ladies will appreciate it. Also, thanks for taking my PHP class. Good luck with it, and let me know if you have any questions.

beverly leeck 2005 june 24th email

Thought you would be interested in "Bel Canto". A friend recommended it and I'm glad she did. I'd rate it a 4 star. She won the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize for it. See her web site at: http://www.annpatchett.com/belcanto.html And, since I'm a big fan of Canadian authors, I highly recommend "A Fine Daughter" by Catherine Simmons Niven (Red Deer Press.) There are many more, but I've written too many 'my thoughts' dissertations today. Love your web site. BJ

shauna 2005 june 22nd

Hi everyone For those of you that are looking to buy the next book there are only copies at West Edmonton Mall. I however bought my book on ebay for $1, $5.99 with shipping. I know it is going to be hard for all of you to believe but I am not just a beautiful body I think that now because of book club I could be a brain as well. Have a great week. Shauna

shawna 2005 june 21st email

HI everyone. I'm looking for a book club to join in Edmonton. I found your site through a google search. Very nice design. I'm not sure if you guys are looking for members, but I would love some info. Tks Shawna

jill 2005 june 15th

well ladies...it looks like mark from 20th century fox gave us the shaft! i'll keep you posted if i hear anything! i had loads of fun at our last meeting!!!!

francie 2005 june 9th

i'm in

melinda 2005 june 8th

Sounds good Jill. Thanks for replying to Mark's comment. I would be interested in screening the film. It sounds like fun!

jill 2005 june 8th

hey ladies....here's the response i got from mark and i have since emailed him to let him know about the number of ladies in our club...i also let him know we would be interested in screening the film... "Hi Jill, Thanks for the response. IN HER SHOES is an incredibly good movie and the studio will be doing a large word-of-mouth campaign in support of it's theatrical release. This will involve inviting a small percentage of the film's target demographic to (in effect) sample the movie with free screening. The hope is those people will then start the positive chatter that will help the film's opening weekend. There's no cost in using the tickets and I'm not interested in any private information from your members. I'm looking for contacts at large book clubs in Alberta. Is your club relatively large? Mark"

jill 2005 june 7th email

Hi Mark, I'm replying to the post you left today on our Books and the City discussion page (http://www.booksandthecity.com). I'm interested in hearing more about what you are contacting book clubs in Alberta for, in relation to this new movie coming out. You can email me at: jillds@shaw.ca Thanks, Jill

mark 2005 june 7th email

Our company is the publicity agency of record for 20th Century Fox Films in western Canada. We have a film entitled, IN HER SHOES and we're trying to reach book clubs in Alberta. I can't seem to find an email for your site, so I thought I'd post here. Could someone please email me. Thanks. Mark

lora 2005 june 5th email

hey girls, i had to check out your website after Francie mentioned at the pedicure party that your book club is so organized. this is too cool. Our club will defintely steal a couple of your books and i must say that Middlesex is one of the best books i've read in a while. i was also excited to see our favourite pet as a special guest -Giles. he looks like a cousin of our greyhound - Zuri. keep up the the good work. i will post some of our favs as well: My Life as a Fake Peter Carey, Never let me go and i am reading Thieves - a novel of Katherine Mansfield, by Janice Keefer. later - Lora

jill 2005 june 3rd

hi nicole...thanks so much for your message....it was very exciting to get our first message from a web visitor we haven't met yet! our book club has been growing and in the last few months we've added another 3 members (who have neglected to get their bios finished yet)....as a result, we're at capacity, and have had to let a few people who wanted to join us know that right now we just don't have any more spots. if you would like, we could email you if one of the book club members can't make it to one of the meetings, and you could join us as a guest. also ,we would love to see you share your comments on any of the books you've read on out list. you can click on the book to leave comments about the book. the book we are currently reading called "Birth of Venus" was so fantastic...i finished on monday and was sad when it was over!!!! Anyway, thanks again for you message and happy reading!

jill 2005 may 31st email

hi sarah...we could look at setting up a calgary edition of books and the city...do you have a group of ladies that are interested?

jill 2005 may 31st

hi ladies!!! speaking of profiles...if any of you want to update your profiles, just email me the changes!!!

shauna 2005 may 30th

Hi there guys I was just checking the site again. Can not wait for the next club as I have been talking about the book to everyone that will listen. Jill I am so sorry it is taking me so long for my profile info. I will try to get that to you as soon as posible!! See you all soon

sarah 2005 may 29th email

Hello everyone - I'm with Nicole that this you seem to be a fabulous group of women, with one very fun book club! Unfortunately, I'm down in Calgary, but would love to set up a "chapter" of Books in the City down here. How do you feel about franchising? ;)

nicole 2005 may 24th email

Hello, ladies... I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm desperately seeking a book club with an intelligent, fun and diverse group of women. I'm a 30-year old therapist and United Church minister living right here in "the city." But after reading your bios, you're probably more interested in my favourite drink (toss up between beer and Mojito) and sign (Scorpio). I'd have to know you better to let you in on anything as personal as my superpowers, I'm afraid. Your recent reading list is quite similar to my own. I love to read but dearly miss having people to share insights with since school days. Please let me know if you have any spaces open in your book club.

jill 2005 may 5th

you're right...it doesn't do her cuteness justice... new book is good so far...the opening is a little unusual. i think that for those that have walked the lovely streets of florence before, the story will be a treat! it makes me wnat to go on holiday!!!

francie 2005 may 2nd

darren, thank you for putting up Buffy 's picture. It looks great but it really doesn't portray how cute she really is....Oh buffy...anyway has anyone read the prologue of the new book... just a tad bit strange....

darren 2005 april 30th

hey lizadies, buffy's photo is up.

jill 2005 april 29th

for sure...we'll get buffy up there this weekend!!!!
