Hi book club members,
I don't have any excuse......I wasn't even in France, or even too busy, but I had a cheap moment and went on the long waiting list at the library. I(Todd)finally ordered it on line and just received it yesterday.
So, obviously I have not read any of it yet, and I also know that Mary was on the library list and still does not have the book.
Does anyone else have any reason why they havent read the book yet?
So I'm proposing a suggestion to move the book club into June sometime. If that doesn't work for the majority I will be doing a quick read. |

Your guys are not going to believe this but Derek won a trip to the Dominican Republic from April 10 to the 17th so I will be missing the next meeting. I would hate to ask everyone to change the date but if there was another time I would love to see you guys. I do however understand if I am asking to much. I am missing you guys and if we can't change the date I will be at the next meeting for sure.

Hi Ladies...I ws loking for the book at Costco but I didn't see it. Has anyone seen it anywhere alse? I'm thinking best bet for anyone who wants to buy it is to order on line at Chapters. Any orders over $40 gets free shipping so if anyone wants to order a copy with me then we can save a few bucks. It will cost around $20. Anyone interested? |

Two years ago Melinda and I went to the "No Sweat Fashion Show" that my friend Jon organizes. It is at Myer Horowitz Theater on Saturday, September 15th.

I pulled into my work parking lot this morning, late as usual. but i had to sit and listen to the new chili peppers song because i really like it. anyway the chorus goes something like....tell me baby, whats your story? where you coming from? where you going to? .. are you lonely? ....
its familiar right? he must of got the idea from the Balinese. except he asks the marriage question differently. anyway, enjoy the song when you hear it. |

Love your web site! Nicely done! I have been searching for some time to find a book club to join. Would like to share a love of books and the opportunity to meet new and interesting people. Many of your books I have read and enjoyed - top five books would be: Stones from the River, Five Quarters of the Orange, Time Traveller's Wife, A Prayer for Owen Meany, A Fine Balance - these five until a great new novel takes hold. Best children's book would be Ferdinand - hands down. Love Dark (80% or more) Chocolate. I see much of your group is quite young. I am a, some would say, hip 47. If you are interested in adding new members who may have more "book reading years" than some-would love to hear from you. |

Hello! We are a group of women who were inspired by the Books in the City website to start our own book club. We've been meeting for a year and are now interested in welcoming new ladies into our group.
We meet every six weeks and rotate who picks our book selection (we have varied tastes within the group) and that person hosts the group either in their home (everyone brings yummy snacks) or at a cafe somewhere.
If you are interested in checking us out please tell us a bit about yourself.
In the playful spirit of Books in the City here are some suggestions...

I take this opportunity to introduce myself as the author of Circles in the Sand, which Morey McNeill a published, international award-winning author has described as a breakthrough work of non-fiction with all of the passion and drama of fiction.
A soul is a beautiful thing to see, and that is what Samadhi's writing shows us
While attending the BookExpo Canada in Toronto, the Body, Soul, and Spirit Holistic Fair in Calgary, and then the Body, Mind and Soul Expo in Seattle, the suggestion to have my book read in women's book clubs was brought up--each time--something I should have jumped on but it’s never too late. I’ve realized what a fantastic way to share a "woman's journey" within a group of women. An added bonus is that men have begun reading it as well, and are asking questions on healing and forgiveness--that’s a gift I wasn’t expecting but am beyond words [and that says a lot because I’m a writer!].
Veiled oppression of Arabian women was the crucial mirror needed to see my reflection. The stark emptiness of the desert echoed my own internal emptiness—until I saw the oasis. Follow my search for what I thought was lost—my soul.
My book is a narrative non-fiction, Circles in the Sand, which is receiving beautiful reviews and is becoming a book written by a woman [me] for women. Many women have shed tears while sharing their personal journeys and have said that my voice is on behalf of all of those who are still learning to find their voice and their truth. The idea was presented to me that a book club would be an amazing experience in sharing, crying, laughing, and being inspired. My web site has a Theme Chart, showing the interweaving storylines, creating for a diverse demographic.
A portion of monies earned is going to Women For Women International. There has been so much in the news lately about Darfur [finally] and seemingly 3/4 of our women are in dire straits. With the festive season soon upon us, I thought it was time to go full-tilt and ask individual clubs if they would be interested. Perhaps after reading the reviews, your group will be inspired as well. As I'm writing this, I think I will make a separate cheque out to WFWI, stating the various women's book clubs that have participated. I love that idea! It brings us all together in giving to those who desperately need us.
If you have a moment to look at my web site, I would be honoured. I also have two beautiful and emotional slide shows that could possibly be shown. I’m not definite on this, as I would not be present to be part of the discussion.
Thank you so much for your time. I appreciate it very, very much! I believe if we can touch one, we can touch one million...

I have ordered 5 books you have reviewed on this website and had already read 2 of the books. Thanks so much for your short reviews, they made me want to read them all. Please keep posting, The Kite Runner is our next book. |

Another one of our books being made into a movie by Brad Pitt's production company (along with Time Traveler's Wife): Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, snagging the rights to the sci-fi novel The Sparrow as a possible starring vehicle for him. The story follows a Jesuit priest who joins a mission to another planet only to provoke a war between two warring races.

wow.... i thought Oprah was too way to harsh towards james frey yesterday. i hope he dosen't start using again. but really, who believes everything they read?? do people really believe that what is written newspapers is "the truth"? give me a break. oprah was choked because she looked bad for defending him. i don't know why this book was supposed to be so great to begin with but i don't think he deserved to be reprimanded like a child in front of an audience. |

Hello ladies - love your site. I couldn't help but notice a few messages posted by people wanting to join a book club...well, I am looking to start a new book club in Edmonton. The kind of books I'd like to read would be pretty similar to the ones on this site. Looking for people in a younger age group (i.e. 35 and under) but that is not a hard-and-fast rule. So, if anyone reading this is interested, please email me for more information. Thanks so much, and happy reading! |

Thought you would be interested in "Bel Canto". A friend recommended it and I'm glad she did. I'd rate it a 4 star. She won the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize for it. See her web site at: http://www.annpatchett.com/belcanto.html
And, since I'm a big fan of Canadian authors, I highly recommend "A Fine Daughter" by Catherine Simmons Niven (Red Deer Press.) There are many more, but I've written too many 'my thoughts' dissertations today.
Love your web site.

hey ladies....here's the response i got from mark and i have since emailed him to let him know about the number of ladies in our club...i also let him know we would be interested in screening the film...
"Hi Jill,
Thanks for the response.
IN HER SHOES is an incredibly good movie and the studio will be doing a large word-of-mouth campaign in support of it's theatrical release. This will involve inviting a small percentage of the film's target demographic to (in effect) sample the movie with free screening. The hope is those people will then start the positive chatter that will help the film's opening weekend.
There's no cost in using the tickets and I'm not interested in any private information from your members. I'm looking for contacts at large book clubs in Alberta.
Is your club relatively large?
Mark"

hey girls, i had to check out your website after Francie mentioned at the pedicure party that your book club is so organized. this is too cool. Our club will defintely steal a couple of your books and i must say that Middlesex is one of the best books i've read in a while.
i was also excited to see our favourite pet as a special guest -Giles. he looks like a cousin of our greyhound - Zuri.
keep up the the good work. i will post some of our favs as well: My Life as a Fake Peter Carey, Never let me go and i am reading Thieves - a novel of Katherine Mansfield, by Janice Keefer.

hi nicole...thanks so much for your message....it was very exciting to get our first message from a web visitor we haven't met yet! our book club has been growing and in the last few months we've added another 3 members (who have neglected to get their bios finished yet)....as a result, we're at capacity, and have had to let a few people who wanted to join us know that right now we just don't have any more spots. if you would like, we could email you if one of the book club members can't make it to one of the meetings, and you could join us as a guest. also ,we would love to see you share your comments on any of the books you've read on out list. you can click on the book to leave comments about the book. the book we are currently reading called "Birth of Venus" was so fantastic...i finished on monday and was sad when it was over!!!! Anyway, thanks again for you message and happy reading! |

Hello, ladies...
I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm desperately seeking a book club with an intelligent, fun and diverse group of women. I'm a 30-year old therapist and United Church minister living right here in "the city." But after reading your bios, you're probably more interested in my favourite drink (toss up between beer and Mojito) and sign (Scorpio). I'd have to know you better to let you in on anything as personal as my superpowers, I'm afraid. Your recent reading list is quite similar to my own. I love to read but dearly miss having people to share insights with since school days. Please let me know if you have any spaces open in your book club. |
